Anoka is Seeking Election Judges 

General Election - November 8, 2022

Official duties of an Election Judge may include:

• Assist voters, register voters and ensure all qualified voters are permitted to vote
• Close polling place following voting and determine results after polls close
• Demonstrate how to vote and distribute ballots to voters and operate voting equipment
• Setting up polling place

Qualifications
To qualify to be an election judge, you must: 

• Be able to read, write and speak English
• Be at least 18 years old on Election Day and be a U.S. Citizen
• Be a Minnesota resident
• Complete required training session(s)
• Not have your voting rights revoked

Non-qualifiers

• A candidate or spouse, parent, child, or sibling of any candidate on the ballot in the same precinct
• A spouse, parent, child or sibling of an election judge serving in the same precinct

Purpose
Election judges are essential to our democracy.  Serving as an election judge provides an opportunity to learn more about the election process and is a great service to our community.

Paid to Serve
Election Judges are paid for training and working on the days of the Elections. Pay ranges are based on position held.  

2022 Election Judge Rates

• Election Judges:  $11.00/per hour (typically 60-80 judges needed)

• Assistant Head Judges:  $11.50/per hour (typically 8 or more needed)

• Head Judges:  $12.00/per hour (typically 8 needed)

• Election Assistant $13.50/per hour (only 1 needed)

Election judges are paid officials who staff the polling places and ensure that the rights of voters are protected on Election Day. Election judges must be at least 18-years-old (unless serving as a student judge).

Absence from Work Protection
Minnesota law allows individuals to serve as an Election Judge and be absent from work without penalty, provided the Employee provides written notice to their Employer at least 20 days prior to each election - Minnesota Statutes Section 204B.195.

Your employer may:

• Reduce your salary or wages by the amount you are paid as an election judge during the time you are away from work.
• Restrict the number of employees serving as an election judge to no more than 20% at a single work site.
• Memorandum from Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
